Modular DAQ
DAQ - Data Aquistion Unit
Mission Overview
Develop a modular, reconfigurable data acquisition and avionics platform capable of supporting a wide range of rocket instrumentation and vehicle systems. The DAQ is designed around interchangeable modules that can be added or removed as needed, allowing the team to scale the system for different missions and test requirements.
Modular Architecture
The system is being built using a specialized modular approach, with each module dedicated to a single function rather than combining multiple capabilities into one board. This decision improves flexibility, simplifies maintenance, and allows the team to expand the platform over time. If additional sensing capacity is required, more modules can be added without redesigning the entire system.
Power and Communications
The platform uses a modular +24V power architecture with a maximum capacity of 120A, providing a robust foundation for distributed avionics and sensor support. Communication is handled through CAN bus, chosen for its reliability and suitability for a multi-module system. Because the Teensy microcontroller only offers partial CAN support, each board requires a dedicated transceiver to ensure proper signal transmission.

Current Module Development
The team has developed several initial modules to establish the foundation of the system, including a solenoid valve module for 32 valves, a thermocouple module for 16 thermocouples, and a pressure transducer module supporting 8 V-type and 8 C-type sensors. Future expansion may include modules for ground station tracking, radar, and signal splitting, allowing the platform to support both data collection and broader vehicle operations.
